The summer of 2012 will be henceforth known as the summer of the Superhero movie. First we had the excellent superhero crossover that everybody had been waiting for since the post-credits scene of Iron Man. Next, we had the excellent Spider-Man reboot most people were sketchy about but ended up loving (and had our doubts proved wrong). And it was a week later that we got the excellent conclusion to Christopher Nolan’s more than excellent Batman trilogy. Really, what needs to be said? Ever since Memento, Nolan has shown to us how large his creative canvas is. Since Batman Begins, fear and darkness have been the recurring themes of the journey of a superhero protecting a city from itself, a city coated in injustice and corruption. In the final third film, Batman/Bruce faces himself and Tom Hardy in a captivating performance as Bane who lets hell break loose in his new, taken over Gotham City. One can truly get a sense of how menacing the film and the situation in the film is. Along with Bale as Bruce/Batman and Hardy as Bane, Gary Oldman is still a tough old man as Commissioner Gordon, Morgan Freeman is still the soothing figure of encouragement to Bruce as Lucius Fox, Michael Caine is still wonderful as Alfred Pennyworth/Bruce’s Batman, and Anne Hathaway gives us an alluring performance as Catwoman. We asked for the series to go out with a bang, but Nolan delivered with a big Boom! Rating: A
